DET Question Types Explained: Every Duolingo English Test Question in 2026

Laptop with quiz interface, headphones and microphone — Duolingo English Test question types

The Duolingo English Test looks nothing like it did two years ago. In July 2025, Duolingo overhauled the format — adding Interactive Speaking and removing two long-standing question types. Most guides online are now outdated.

This is the current, accurate breakdown of every DET question type in 2026: what each one asks, how long you get, which subscores it feeds, and the timing traps that cost test-takers points.

Quick answer: The DET has 3 parts — ~5 min setup, a ~45 min adaptive test (scored), and ~10 min of Writing + Speaking samples. The adaptive section mixes 14+ question types across reading, writing, listening and speaking, scored 10–160. Since July 2025, Interactive Speaking is in; Read Aloud and Listen Then Speak are out.

Test Structure Overview

Part Duration Scored?
1. Setup — ID check, face photo, room scan ~5 min No
2. Adaptive Test — mixed question types, difficulty adjusts to you ~45 min Yes — overall 10–160 + subscores
3. Writing Sample + Speaking Sample ~10 min Not scored by Duolingo — sent to institutions

What Changed in July 2025

Change Detail
Added: Interactive Speaking 6–8 adaptive conversation turns, 35 seconds per answer
Removed: Read Aloud No longer in the test
Removed: Listen Then Speak No longer in the test
Improved: Interactive Listening New “Listen and Complete” task; shorter minimum response times
Why this matters: older guides (and many YouTube videos) still teach Read Aloud and Listen Then Speak as current. If your prep material mentions them, it’s pre-July-2025 — find updated material.

How the Adaptive Engine Works

The DET isn’t a fixed test — it’s adaptive. Answer well and the next questions get harder; struggle and they get easier. The grading engine continuously recalibrates your estimated level, which means:

  • Early questions matter more — they set your difficulty band
  • Harder questions = higher ceiling — if the test feels hard, that’s good news
  • Never leave blanks — partial credit exists on most types; a guess can only help

Subscores: What Universities Actually See

Beyond the 10–160 overall score, DET reports 4 integrated subscores — Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation, Production — plus individual Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening scores (added July 2024). Universities increasingly set cutoffs on both: e.g., one UK program asks 125 overall with Conversation ≥115 and Production ≥120.

FAQs

How many question types are on the Duolingo English Test?

14+ across the adaptive section, plus the unscored Writing and Speaking samples. The exact mix varies per test-taker because the test is adaptive.

Is Read Aloud still on the DET?

No. Read Aloud and Listen Then Speak were removed in the July 2025 format update. Interactive Speaking was added in their place.

Which DET question type is hardest?

Most test-takers struggle with Interactive Speaking (35-second adaptive turns) and Summarize the Conversation (75 seconds to organize a spoken summary). Both reward practice, not memorization.

How long is the Duolingo English Test?

About 1 hour total: ~5 min setup, ~45 min adaptive test, ~10 min samples. Results arrive within 48 hours.

Do universities see my subscores?

Yes — institutions receive your overall score, the 4 integrated subscores, and individual skill scores, plus your Writing and Speaking samples.
