Are you wondering how much Duolingo’s premium subscription, Super Duolingo, costs? You’re not alone – many language learners consider upgrading to access extra features. This guide covers everything you need to know about Super Duolingo pricing in 2025, including monthly vs. yearly costs, family plans, free trials, and whether the paid tiers are worth it. Let’s dive in!
What is Super Duolingo?
Before we get into pricing, let’s quickly go over what Super Duolingo is. Super Duolingo is Duolingo’s premium subscription service that provides additional features and an ad-free experience on top of the core free app.
Some key benefits of Super Duolingo include:
- No ads interrupting your lessons
- Unlimited attempts (no more running out of hearts)
- Progress quizzes to test your skills
- Mistake review to practice weak areas
- Early access to new Duolingo features
While the free Duolingo app is incredibly robust on its own, Super aims to provide a smoother, more uninterrupted learning experience for dedicated users.
Super Duolingo Pricing Plans
Duolingo offers three main pricing tiers – Free, Super, and Super Family. Here’s a quick overview of each plan’s pricing in 2025:
Plan | Price Per Month | Price Per Year |
---|---|---|
Free | $0 | $0 |
Super | $12.99 | $59.99 |
Super Family | 9.99 | $119.99 |
The Free plan is Duolingo’s core offering that gives you full access to courses across 40+ languages but with ads and some limitations like running out of hearts.
The Super plan is $12.99 per month when paid monthly, but drops to an equivalent $5 per month ($59.99 per year) if you subscribe annually.
The Super Family plan is an annual subscription that costs $119.99 per year and allows up to 6 users to share one Super Duolingo subscription.
Super Duolingo Monthly Cost
If you opt for Duolingo’s monthly Super subscription, it will cost you $12.99 per month. This pricing applies whether you subscribe through the website, iOS app, or Android app.
The monthly Super plan is the most expensive option when compared to paying annually for long-term commitments.
Super Duolingo Yearly Cost
To get the best value for an individual Super subscription, paying annually is the way to go. Duolingo’s yearly Super plan costs $59.99 per year, which breaks down to just $5 per month.
That’s over 60% savings compared to the $12.99 monthly Super price! The annual billing makes this a much more cost-effective option for consistent Duolingo users.
Super Duolingo Family Plan Cost
Duolingo’s Super Family plan is tailored for groups looking to learn languages together. At $9.99 per month and $119.99 per year, it allows up to 6 people to share one Super subscription.
When broken down per user, that amounts to just $1.67 per month for the full Super experience – an incredible bargain! The Family plan exponentially increases the value if you have multiple household members interested in using Duolingo.
Is Super Duolingo Worth the Cost?
The free Duolingo experience is fantastic on its own, so the real question is whether upgrading to Super provides enough extra value to justify the costs. Let’s weigh some key pros and cons:
Reasons to Upgrade to Super
No Ads or Unlimited Hearts: This solves a major gripe many free users have – constantly seeing ads interrupt lessons and running out of hearts which prevents further practice. Super gives you an uninterrupted, unrestricted experience.
Progress Tracking and Mistake Review: Super’s Practice Hub helps you laser in on vocabulary and concepts you’re struggling with through personalized practice sessions. It’s a great way to maximize your learning efficiency.
Early Access to New Features: As a paying subscriber, you’ll often get first dibs on new features Duolingo rolls out before they hit the free version.
Reasons to Stay on Free Plan
Already a Solid Free Experience: Despite its limitations like ads and hearts, Duolingo’s free version still provides an incredibly robust and gamified language learning experience with full courses.
Cost Considerations: While Super pricing is fair, it’s an added recurring cost on top of the free app. Depending on your finances, it may not be viable.
Satisfaction with Existing Features: If you’re content with the free features as-is and don’t mind the limitations, upgrading may not provide enough extra value.
How to Get Super Duolingo for Free or Cheaper
Don’t want to pay for Super upfront? Duolingo regularly offers opportunities to try it for free or at a discounted rate.
Free Trial of Super Duolingo
Most Duolingo users are eligible for a 14-day free trial of the full Super Duolingo experience. To activate it:
- Open the Duolingo app
- Tap on any Super feature like unlimited hearts
- Follow the prompts to start your 14-day free trial
This gives you an extended window to decide if Super is worth subscribing to long-term.
Super Duolingo Discounts and Promos
In addition to free trials, Duolingo sometimes releases promotional codes that can lower the cost of Super even further.
For example, in late 2022 Duolingo offered the DRACARYS code which granted a free 30-day Super trial. Stacking multiple free trials like these allows you to use Super for an extended period at no cost.
Checking websites like RetailMeNot can surface any active Duolingo discounts or promo codes you can apply as well.

Yes, Duolingo adjusts pricing for Super to account for differences in currency values and regional costs of living. Subscribers in countries like Turkey or India can get it for significantly cheaper.

Super Duolingo Alternatives
Of course, Duolingo isn’t the only language-learning resource out there. Here’s a quick look at how Super’s pricing compares to some popular alternatives:
- Babbel: $17.95 per month
- Busuu: $13.90 per month
- Pimsleur: $21 per month
Duolingo’s Super plan is reasonably priced compared to the competition, considering its quality and affordability.
Conclusion
At the end of the day, whether Super Duolingo is worth paying for comes down to your goals, commitment level, and personal finances. But hopefully, this guide has given you a clear picture of what you get for the cost.
If you’re a consistent, dedicated Duolingo user looking to take your learning up a notch, subscribing annually for $59.99 or splitting the $119.99 Family plan makes Super an extremely cost-effective investment.
However, if you’re just starting or are satisfied with the free experience as-is, feel free to keep using the core Duolingo app without upgrading. You can always take advantage of a free trial to get a taste of Super.
No matter which route you choose, consistent practice is key for mastering a new language. With Duolingo’s structured yet fun lessons, you’ll be on your way to fluency before you know it! Let me know if you have any other questions.
Why am I paying the family subscription price? I never asked for that. I should only be paying $59.99
instead of $119- I can’t remember the exact amount.
Please change my subscription and refund any amount over the $59.99.
Also, I’m getting a bit annoyed about the new format, where I seem to be repeating the same lessons over and over, with very few new words or phrases being taught.
Thanks
Marion
Hi Marion, I’m really sorry about the billing mix-up. It looks like your account is on the Family plan by mistake. To switch to the individual Super subscription at \$59.99/year, just head to Settings → Manage Subscription, cancel the Family plan, and then sign up for the Solo annual plan. If you’ve already paid more than \$59.99, send your receipt to Duolingo Support and they’ll help you with a refund for the difference.
As for seeing the same lessons repeat, Duolingo’s system sometimes recycles material to reinforce your memory. If you’d like fresher content, try using the “Stories” feature or the “Practice” button—these let you target new skills. You can also supplement with grammar books or conversation partners to break out of the loop.
Thanks for flagging this, and apologies again for the frustration. Hope this gets you back on the right track!
How come it is 11 cents more expensive (per year) to get the yearly family plan, then to pay for the family plan on a monthly basis?
Hey Troy — good catch! That small price gap might come from how app stores round regional pricing or apply taxes differently between billing methods. Normally, annual plans are cheaper, so this could be a display glitch or just quirky pricing logic on Duolingo’s end. Worth reaching out to support to double-check—might save you a few cents!
The price in Super Duolingo should be updated because I paid last year in december for 71.90€ anual Super Duolingo and it says it’s 59.99$ which is not true because if we change to euros, that should be max 54€ and that’s not true!!
Hi Carolina, you’re absolutely right to point that out — the $59.99 price is based on the U.S. rate, but international pricing (like in euros) often includes VAT and regional adjustments, which bumps it up. Unfortunately, Duolingo doesn’t do a straight currency conversion. It’s frustrating, especially when it feels like you’re paying more. Hopefully they bring more transparency to global pricing soon. Appreciate you flagging this!
Your advertising a 60% off deal but when i go to purchase the family annual membership its same price as its always! No deal
Hi Maryrose, sorry for the confusion! Promo offers can sometimes be region-locked or require entering a code at checkout. Try these steps:
Log out and back into Duolingo to refresh available deals.
On the purchase screen, look for a “Have a promo code?” link and enter any code you’ve received.
If it still shows the full price, reach out to Duolingo Support—they’ll verify if the discount applies to your account or region.
Hope that clears it up!
In my opinion an initial enjoyable learning process a clever, cunning, tempting, graduated, money making scheme that if I wanted to advance costs money or the learning process is restrictive. Sorry I have sussed it and although it has cost me time and a relatively small amount for a years subscription up front have discontinued. I am the unhappy loser.
Ouch, Patrick—totally get where you’re coming from. It’s frustrating to feel fun lessons suddenly locked behind a paywall. Duolingo’s core courses are still free, so you can keep practicing without cost, but some advanced tools do require Super. If that model doesn’t click for you, you might explore other free resources like Memrise or Clozemaster, which focus more on vocabulary and sentence context. Thanks for giving Super a shot and sharing your experience—every bit of feedback helps improve how these apps serve learners.
Question
I currently subscribe to Duolingo family plan. On the annual update I no longer need the family plan. How do I make the change to the subscription?
To switch off the Family plan, just head into your Duolingo Settings → Manage Subscription, cancel the Family package, then pick the Solo annual Super plan. Note that Duolingo doesn’t prorate mid-year, so you’ll start fresh with the single-user billing cycle. If you run into any hiccups or need a refund, Duolingo’s support team can sort it out for you.
I have the family plan now, can I change my plan in the middle of the annual subscription to a single user?
Unfortunately, Duolingo doesn’t support mid-cycle downgrades. You’ll need to cancel your current Family subscription in Settings, then purchase the annual Single Super plan. If you’d like any proration or a partial refund, just reach out to Duolingo support.
Please add an exclusive area for verbs conjugation and a grammar section as well. I like all the additional music and math options, but you seriously need to complete the learning languages with a separate section for Verb Conjugation and Grammar.
Thank you.
Hey Dahyana, thank you for the thoughtful feedback! You’re definitely not alone — a lot of dedicated learners have been asking for more focused areas like verb conjugation and grammar explanations. While Duolingo does sprinkle those elements into lessons, having a separate section would make things way clearer and easier to revisit.
The app is expanding into new areas like music and math, which is exciting, but I agree that the core language tools still need some strengthening. Let’s hope Duolingo takes notes from users like you and brings in more grammar-focused features soon. Appreciate your comment!
I recently updated my Duolingo for super thinking it would cost $5 a month. Looks like you put me on a family plan which costs more. I am also a senior which may be a discount. I am listed as Ken (my husband) can you switch me to the cheaper account thanks, Karen
Hi Karen! Sorry for the mix-up. Duolingo doesn’t offer a senior rate, so you were placed on the Family plan by default. To get the $5/mo personal rate:
Cancel your Family subscription in Settings
Re-subscribe to the annual Super plan
If you hit any issues, Duolingo support can handle the switch for you. Let me know if you need anything else!
How much is it for a year in australia and does it have go through? Apple App Store or can i use my credit card? Thanks James King
Hey James! In Australia the annual Super plan runs about AUD 89.99 (prices can vary slightly by region). You can subscribe two ways:
Apple App Store: billed through your Apple ID
Duolingo.com: pay with any major credit card
Just pick whichever feels easiest for you. Enjoy!
Way too expensive for the services offered. Some people, even in the very prosperous United States still live in impoverished areas and have little means to afford an annual fee of over $100. Then thise people who cannot afford the annual fees end up paying 2 to 3 times the annual fee in favor of monthly installments. Clearly the developers of such a “so-called ” wonderful app are greedy behind description.
The app pushes too much too fast with no opportunities to simply practice. One lesson a day with the massive push to learn and retain vocabularies with simply no opportunities to practice. Additionally conjugation of verbs is almost nonexistent. The clues and suggestions are vague and confusing.
Hi Stacy, I really appreciate you taking the time to share your honest thoughts. You’re right — affordability is a real concern for many people, even in wealthier countries, and it’s frustrating when the monthly option ends up being more expensive in the long run. That kind of pricing model doesn’t work for everyone.
As for the learning structure — you’ve raised a valid point. Some users do feel overwhelmed by the pace and lack of focused practice, especially when it comes to grammar and conjugation. Duolingo leans heavily on immersion and repetition, but it’s not always the most effective for everyone, especially if you’re someone who prefers more structured explanations.
It’s definitely not a perfect system, and feedback like yours is important. Hopefully Duolingo will continue improving its format and accessibility. Thanks again for your insight.
Thanks for breaking down the pricing! I’ve been using free Duolingo for 6 months now and getting really annoyed with the heart system. Running out of hearts right when I’m in a good flow is so frustrating 😤 The $5/month for yearly subscription seems reasonable. Do you think it’s worth upgrading if I’m already pretty committed to daily practice?
Hi Sarah! If you’re already doing daily practice and the heart system is interrupting your flow, Super would definitely be worth it for you. The unlimited hearts alone will solve that frustration, plus you’ll get the mistake review feature which is great for reinforcing what you’ve learned. I’d suggest trying the 14-day free trial first to see how much you use the extra features!
